Credentials that matter

  • Board certification in general surgery (or equivalent in country)
  • Fellowship or documented experience in bariatric / metabolic surgery
  • Active membership in ASMBS, IFSO, or a comparable society
  • Facility accreditation (JCI internationally, MBSAQIP in the U.S.)

Questions to ask any program

  • How many procedures of the type you're considering are performed each year?
  • What are the program's published complication and readmission rates?
  • Who provides long-term follow-up, and for how long?
  • What is included in the quoted price — and what is not?
  • How are complications after travel handled?
